Where to buy property in France? Property in Britanny
The region as a whole has literally been invaded by Brits over the last 10 years. It’s not Spain levels yet, but in 2005 1 in 5 properties were bought by brits. We talk about Britanny as a whole because certain areas are still very quiet and you do get great value for your money.
There are four departments (areas) in Britanny: Morbihan, Côtes d’armor, Finistère and Ille et vilaine.
L’ille et Vilaine is where Rennes is based. A large town with 300 000 inhabitants. Prices are very high… even for suburbs such as Vitré or Fougères. This is a beautiful part of Britanny, but you will have to pay the price to live here.
The côtes d’armor and Finistère reach right out into the sea… this is the Britanny you see on postcards. Quiet, peaceful, prices are already high but if you’re looking for traditional France this is the place to go.
Finally the Morbihan, this departement is in southern Britanny which basically means warmer weather and as its further from the ferry ports, not so many brits. It may not have all the characteristics of traditional France, but there is some great potential for properties near Vannes or Lorient. On an investment point of view, rental income in Lorient is very strong.
