Obama suggests supporting pharmaceutical marijuana

Added: (Sun Nov 25 2007)

http://cannazine.co.uk: With the pre-cursor to the United States Presidential Election just a few short weeks away, (The Primary's), Illinois junior congressman and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has once more found himself answering questions on his own past drug dalliances.

Whilst attending a "Town Hall" campaign meeting in Iowa a voter asked Obama if he was FOR the legalization of medical marijuana?

Obama said that he wasn't in favor of legalization without scientific evidence and tight controls. Referring to his mother who died from cancer young, Obama compared marijuana to morphine saying there was little difference between the two.

"My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that's something I'm open to because there's no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said.

Which would suggest Obama would be prepared to support the legislation change only if it were tightly controlled by the pharmaceutical industry. In a similar vein to how cocaine and heroin (diamorphine) are controlled and we all know how that works.

Its a clear indication if any where needed, that the Democratic party are waiting to see what the pharmaceutical corps can come up with in their own medical marijuana research, before making any long term commitments on the greater medical cannabis debate.

In the meantime, the patients who are in chronic pain, continue to wait!
