The Industry Minister, Joan Clos, has officially inaugurated the largest photovoltaic energy plant in Europe, covering an area of 100 hectares in La Hoya de Vicentes, Jumilla, where the local Mayor says 300 days of sun a year are guaranteed. Its total annual production will be the equivalent of the energy used by 20,000 homes.

It took a team of 400 people 11 months to build the Jumilla plant, where 120,000 solar panels are grouped into 200 separate photovoltaic arrays to convert light from the sun into electricity. It’s expected to generate an annual income of 19 million €, and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 42,000 tons a year.

Joan Clos, Spain Industry Minister official opened Europe’s largest Solar Energy Plant.

The plant has 120,000 solar panels covering 100 hectares of land in La Hoya de Vicentes, Jumilla. It will produce enough power for the annual energy consumption of 20,000 properties.

The minister quoted on Wednesday. “It currently accounts for around 7% of the total primary energy produced, and will reach 10% in 2010 if biomass production is added onto the energy produced by solar and wind farms. Spain will be able to reach the European Union’s target of a 20% share by 2020.

The Mayor of Jumilla, Francisco Abellán, was proud to announce that the plant is the most important clean energy project in the Murcia Region, and probably the most important in Spain.

400 people took 11 months to build the solar plant, with 120,000 solar panels. It will convert light from the sun into electricity and is expected to generate an annual income of 19 million €, and importantly reduce Spain’s CO2 emissions by 42,000 tons a year, from this one project alone
