Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time

Australian adventurer and former London Primary school teacher Paula Constant has begun her quest to become the first woman to walk across the Sahara unaided.

It’s the latest stage of a mamouth walking adventure that began with Paula walking from Trafalgar Square in London, in 2004. Since then, she has walked over 7,500 kilometres, through France, Spain, and Portugal, and most recently Paula walked 2,500km with four camels and a Saharawi guide, through the desert of Morocco and the Western Sahara. Before the walk began in 2004, Paula had no expedition or adventure experience.

After her mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, Paula chose to use her walk to raise money for Breast Cancer Research, through the National Breast Cancer Foundation of Australia. “I had no idea what it really meant to walk with a pack before I left. I just knew that I wanted to do something other than remain stuck in the cycle of work and pay, wondering if there was something else out there.” Says Paula. “I read and dreamed of adventure., and was determined to travel in a way that would allow me to be a part of the world around me, rather than watching it through the TV screen of car or bus. There was a rhythm and slow pace to the walking that appealed to me.”

The latest leg of her adventure has been made possible by the support of her Australian Sponsors Dove and Birkenstock, and here in the UK, Utopia Travel Insurance. As well as providing insurance cover for the trip Utopia are also supporting Paula with funding towards the range of equipment she needs, from a military grade laptop to a team of camels. Utopia’s link up with travel and security experts red24 means Paula has access to a host of advice and support both before she leaves and throughout her journey.

She will walk through Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Libya and Egypt. It is the first time a woman has made a solo crossing on foot of the Sahara without backup of any kind.
