'Second skin' undergarments help reduce the itching and scratching associated with eczema.

A genetic disease with an unknown cause, eczema can be a struggle to manage and in severe cases, staying on top of it can be a fulltime task. For optimum results, those in the know recommend a holistic approach that encompasses what we eat and wear as well as what we put in our baths and on our skin.

DermaSilk therapeutic clothing technology from Espère Healthcare, is made from a hypoallergenic silk fibre that can soothe irritated skin and promote healing in cases of allergic contact dermatitis. As a base garment it allows the skin to breathe, regulating body temperature and maintaining the skin’s moisture balance whilst helping control bacteria and fungi that can cause infected skin conditions and body odour.

There are approximately 3 million eczema sufferers in the UK, and one in five children have the condition. 3 year old Sam has suffered from eczema all over his body since he was a month old. Two years ago he was one of first people in the UK to trial DermaSilk using the pyjamas . Sam’s mother Sandra kept a record: "The improvement in Sam's skin over the past 14 days has been fantastic. Except for the time that Sam was in hospital having intensive treatment, I don't think I have seen his skin looking so good. Even my family have commented on how good he is looking. He is sleeping so much better at night which makes him happier during the day".

"Sam has not objected to wearing the pyjamas 24/7, and he even makes sure that I don't forget to put clean ones on when I change him. Although he has worn his gloves a few times it has been difficult in keeping them on him. Because of this, and that he has not had any DermaSilk socks to wear, you can actually see the improvement the clothing has made compared to his hands and feet". Two years on and Sam is still using the DermaSilk pyjamas. He’s now at school and his family have received glowing reports from his teacher regarding his attentiveness in lessons.

The range, which includes gloves, socks, face and eye masks, vests, pants, bodysuits and leggings for babies, children and adults, is proven to be more effective than traditional cotton clothing in helping to reduce the itching and scratching associated with eczema and helps speed up the overall healing process. Espère Healthcare’s co-director Chris Steeples observes, “Although most people think of cotton as the natural choice for eczema and other allergic skin conditions, cotton material is actually made up of short fibres which when damp can twist and break, thus irritating the skin. By contrast, pure silk is spun into continuous lengths of up to 800 metres, and the fibres are smooth and cylindrical, causing far less itch."
