Telemedcare Takes Telehealth to Taiwan

The British Trade and Cultural Office (BTCO) held the UK-Taiwan International Telehealth Conference on Sept. 18 2007, to discuss the latest issues concerning Telehealth Technology providers, who provide remote assistance to the sick and elderly.
The conference was held in conjunction with the Telecare Industry Alliance Taiwan and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
Telemedcare Ltd, a leading provider of Telehealth solutions in the UK and Asia Pacific was invited to speak at the conference about the next generation of Telemedical technology. Professor Branko Celler, CEO of Telemedcare, presented case studies from the UK and discussed how the re-engineering of Care Services, with Telehealth, can deliver significant benefits to both public and private health care providers.
Jeremy Blackman, Service Development and Project Manager from Kent County Council, spoke about how well received the Telehealth service was in his home county. Dr. William Maton-Howarth, Chief Research Officer for public health in England's Department of Health (DoH), explained how the UK was investing in numerous projects such as the WSD pilots and also presented an overview of the DoH vision for the future of Telehealth solutions.
A major healthcare initiative announced by the Taiwanese Government will see NT$40 billion investment in improving care for older people. This includes integration of technology into public healthcare services funded by different government departments such as the Dept of Health and Dept of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Taiwan’s mission is to “create a functional model to provide integrated and ubiquitous electronic long term care and emergency consult based on applications of IC technology and health care electronics”.
The second part of the invitation by the UK and Taiwanese governments was to discuss the development of sustainable business models for the successful delivery of Telehealth technology as part of these future projects. In Taiwan, currently over 9.7% of the population is aged over 65, and within the next 20 years that figure will double, meaning there is urgent need for alternative care solutions to assist the growing demand for community and health care. Telemedcare’s third generation of Telehealth technology provides real opportunities for the Taiwanese government to successfully develop Telehealth solutions in managing long term conditions.
Saneth Wijayaratna, Business and Strategy Manager for Telemedcare, part of the UK team to visit Taiwan said “This is a really exciting time for Telemedcare. To be recognized as a leader in this field in a foreign market is fantastic achievement. The support from our British Trade & Cultural Office was second to none. Taiwan is an exceptional market as they have both a national and private healthcare service. They have some exciting business models to make Telehealth a mainstream service. We are very confident that our innovative technology and unique service models can play an important role in achieving this goal”.
