Pressbox (Press Release) -
Members of Slimming World at Lillington have been voting on their favourite sandwich fillings to coincide with British Sandwich Week (13-19 May). The group, which meets at Lillington Primary School in Leamington Spa every Thursday evening, have devised lots of unusual sandwich fillings as part of a competition.
Consultant, Julie Thomas said: Some people assume that just because youre trying to lose weight you have to cut out bread and tasty sandwich fillings. Our recipe ideas certainly dispel that myth! With Slimming Worlds Food Optimising plan, no food is banned. Indeed, many members take sandwiches to work or school on a daily basis and lots of the fillings that they use can be eaten freely in unlimited quantities.
The groups favourite sandwich filling recipe was a more traditional steak and onion. Other more unusual recipes included Curried Quorn, Smoked Salmon with Horseradish and Mexican Bean Triple Decker Club Sandwich.
Im planning to publish a list of all the different sandwich fillings to circulate to the members we have a recipe for every day of the year, so there will be no need for boredom when it comes to packed lunches and picnics. Variety is certainly the spice of life and the secret to slimming success, said Julie.
The British Sandwich Association defines a sandwich as: Any form of bread with a filling, generally assembled cold - to include traditional wedge sandwiches, as well as filled rolls, baguettes, pitta, bloomers, wraps, bagels and the like, but not burgers and other products assembled and consumed hot. Hot eating sandwiches are also included.
It is exactly 245 years since the sandwich came into being. According to the history books, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, was an enthusiastic gambler and didn't like leaving the gaming table whilst playing so instead of breaking for a meal, he asked that someone bring him some meat between a couple of slices of bread. This caught on amongst other players who said "I'll have what Sandwich is having" and eventually, people would just ask for "a sandwich"!
