SHAFON: AN MPS VI STORY
Los Angeles, California
May 13, 2008
Something is killing our kids and it’s not human.
Shafon has a rare genetic disorder called mucopolysaccharidosis type six (MPS VI). Also known as Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome, the disease is widely variable, but can affect virtually every body system.
Shafon stands about three feet tall and weighs about 40 pounds. She has severe hearing and vision impairment and has lost the use of her voice because she must breathe through a tracheostomy tube placed in her throat.
Shafon just celebrated her 18th birthday. She wasn’t supposed to live past ten years of age so everyday is a blessing. What also makes Shafon special is that she attends public school, and works two part time jobs. This documentary explores the life and trials of this extraordinary young woman, while examining the mystery of her illness. And although her life would never be as fulfilling as we interpret our lives to be, she represents hope and a never ending search for love and happiness in a body not of her own choosing.
The Package includes:
-- Event footage and Soundbites
-- Deleted Scenes
-- Trailer
