Sachin Tendulkars Shoulder problem is an overuse injury
The shoulder injury that has affected Sachin is called a Labral tear or SLAP tear. It is a common injury in sportsmen in games like Cricket, volley ball, Tennis, Javelin throw and other throwing sports. In Cricketers, it affects bowlers more than Batsmen. Fast bowlers frequently develop shoulder pain.
It results from the act of throwing and is called a throwing injury. A throw is an act of propelling a ball or object in a series of actions. During the act of throwing a ball from the boundary a fielder affected by this condition may suddenly develop pain and throw the ball in underhand.
During repeated acts of throwing, the ball of the arm bone rubs on the undersurface of the Glenoid labrum, a ring like cartilage attached to the Glenoid cavity. Tears develop on the undersurface of the rotator cuff. This is called Internal impingment.
A labral tear develops when the labrum detaches from its attachment to the margin of the glenoid. The arm bone can then move upwards in an abnormal manner and this is called instability.
The best treatment for this condition is though Shoulder arthroscopy. The inside of the shoulder is visualized and frayed areas of labrum are mown away with a shaver. The detached labrum is then reattached to its original site with suture anchors.
Rehabilitation after arthroscopic shoulder surgery can take upto 6 to 8 weeks. Return to sports is possible after that .
