Protect Yourself & Your Family from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Whilst on Holiday
Added: (Thu Apr 24 2008)
Since the death of two children at a holiday apartment in Corfu in 2006, and the recent death this month of a man in Newquay Cornwall, it has once again highlighted the dangers faced with carbon monoxide poisoning whilst staying away from home, be it abroad, or in the UK
Carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer, because it is a colourless, odourless, tasteless toxic gas, and because we cannot smell it, it is very difficult to detect with the human senses.
Once it has been inhaled, CO is absorbed into the blood stream and it takes the place of oxygen in the blood cells, so a red blood cell is carrying CO instead of oxygen. CO kills hundreds of people each year and injures many more. Early detection of carbon monoxide will help keep you and your family safe whilst abroad or away from home.
Taking a Carbon Monoxide Detector abroad, or in the UK with you, will enable you to check the safety of the hotel room, villa or apartment you are staying in. It is especially ideal if you are traveling with a young family, as infants and young children are more vulnerable, as with the elderly.
www.donttravelwithoutit.com has introduced a new product; it is a Travel Carbon Monoxide Detector which detects carbon monoxide at very low level. It has been tested by SIRA and has CE approval. It is small, compact, battery operated, lightweight and portable for travel. It is ideal for holidays in the UK and abroad. It can also be used if working in confined and unfamiliar spaces, travelling in cars, buses and trains. There is nothing else on the market quite like this little gadget. It also has a loud alarm to warn you of any dangers, so you and your family can get out of the building and to a safe area. Priced at just £19.99
Watch out for the following symptoms which may be related to CO poisoning
CO is measured in Parts Per Million (PPM)
35 ppm The max allowable concentration for continuous exposure for healthy adults in an 8 hour period
200 ppm - Slight headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea after 2 – 3 hours
400 ppm - Frontal headaches within 1 - 2 hours, life threatening after 3 hours
800 ppm - Dizziness, nausea and convulsions within 45 minutes. Unconsciousness within 2 hours death within 3 hours
1600 ppm – Headache, dizziness and nausea within 20 minutes. Death within 1 hour
The mini alarm is designed to activate when the poisonous Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas is detected at a range of 35–65 ppm. The mini alarm will detect levels of the dangerous gas early enough for individuals to remove themselves and their family from the effected area and notify the property manager responsible.
