Pressbox (Press Release) -
A dry mouth might considerably increase the risk of tooth decay. The saliva in the mouth help in washing away a lot of germs which cause decay as they also help in neutralizing the acidity in the mouth which cause tooth decay. If there is limited or reduced saliva then bacteria in your mouth will produce acids at a faster rate. This draws out minerals from enamel which results in rapid decay. Plaque on the other side can also calcify very fast. Plaque can cause infection of the gums and inflammation causing gum problems.
Preventing Tooth Decay
- You should brush your teeth at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. If possible brush after every meal and especially after your dinner.
- Clean between your teeth daily with floss that is recommended by your dentist.
- It is also recommended that you use a soft bristle toothbrush to clean your teeth.
- You should also use tongue cleaners to remove the plaque that house bacterial and cause decay.
- You should use sensitive care toothpaste which is recommended for decay prevention.
- You can also use fluoride gels that would protect the enamel.
- Eat balanced and nutritious meals and limit your snacks. You should avoid carbohydrates like pretzels, candy and chips which remain on the tooth surface. If you eat sticky foods then brush your teeth.
- You can also check with your dentist regarding use of supplemental fluoride that strengthens your teeth.
- You can also consult your dentist regarding dental sealant which is protective coating applied to chewing surface at the back surface of your teeth in order to protect from decay.
- You should also drink water that is fluoridated. At least a small amount of fluoridated water is necessary everyday in order to protect children from tooth decay. Most tap water already has added fluoride.
- You should also visit your dentist regularly for professional oral examination and cleaning.
Further Research in Preventing Tooth Decay
However, there are ongoing researches on developing various other means to prevent tooth decay. A study found that chewing gum which contains xylitol temporarily retarded the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Apart from this there are several materials being explored that gradually release fluoride over time that help in preventing further decay. These materials would be placed in pits or in between teeth and fissures of teeth. Mouth rinses and toothpastes which can heal and reverse early cavities are also being studied.
