Aromatherapy is the practice of using naturally distilled essences of trees, plants, flowers, fruits and herbs to promote the health and wellbeing of your body, mind, and emotions.
These natural essences are called essential oils and can help to heal our body and restore balance and harmony to your life. Of course the best essential oils are organic essential oils and these are a great source of healing. Many people find that organic essential oils are very useful as preventative aids in the fight against illness, as well as, an effective cure for many ailments.
The scent of organic essential oil can induce an amazing power as they influence our moods. Our sense of smell is the most direct path to our emotions and organic essential oils can have a very beneficial effect not only on our minds but also on our physical wellbeing. This is the principle behind the practice of aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy and the use of organic essential oils originated in France in the late 1930s when a chemist by the name of René-Maurice Gattefosse burned his hand quite severely. Seeking relief from the pain, Gattefosse submerged his hand in a container of pure organic lavender oil.
To his surprise, the pain and discoloration faded almost immediately, and the burn healed just a few hours later. Impressed by his discovery, Gattefosse and some of his colleagues continued to experiment with different organic essential oils. The techniques they established are still widely used today.
Since those early pioneering days of the 1930's aromatherapy has become very popular with natural health practitioners and we have slowly become more aware of the fantastic positive health properties of essential oils and the many ways they bring benefit to your health. The growth in the number of professional aromatherapy practitioners in the last 20 years has been phenomenal although using essential oils needn't be difficult or expensive and aromatherapy is seen as an ideal home remedy for most minor ailments.

There are many varied uses for essential oils here are a few that Natural By Nature recommend:
Vaporisation: To create your own atmosphere, add up to 10 drops of essential oil to your vaporiser, diffuser or essential oil burner (remember to dilute using pure water when using a burner and never let the water dry out).
Air freshener: You can create your own aromatherapy air freshener quickly and easily with a simple spray bottle. To make your air freshener put 100ml of pure water into the spray bottle. Add 50-75 drops of essential oil. Shake well and spray into the air.
Massage: Add up to 12 drops of essential oil to 25ml of base oil or for example 1 drop of essential oil to 2ml of base oil. For children, or for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding and for those who have sensitive skin, use half the amount of drops. Some essential oils have a powerful fragrance, such as Geranium and Peppermint and these require fewer drops.
Bath: Fill your bath and add 2-5 drops of essential oil. Before bathing, gently agitate the water to disperse the oil evenly. For sensitive skin and children, it is advisable to mix your essential oil in Jojoba oil before adding it to your bath water.Dry skin, eczema and psoriasis can be aggravated by direct contact with essential oils or water and so it is also advisable to add your essential oils to 5ml of Jojoba before adding to your bath water.
Foot Bath: Add 6 - 8 drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water and soak feet for approximately 10 minutes.
Compress: Add up to 6 drops of essential oil to a small bowl of warm or cold water, soak a clean cloth, gently squeeze out surplus water and place on the area to be treated. Repeat as required.
Neat Application: It is not advisable to apply neat essential oils to the skin, however there are some exceptions. Ensure that you avoid making contact with the surrounding healthy skin.
Inhalation: Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to a heatproof bowl of near boiling water. Lean over the bowl and cover head with a towel (keeping eyes closed). Inhale slowly at first, then gradually breathe deeper. Do this for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, add 6 drops to a handkerchief and inhale as required.
Caution:
Do not take essential oils internally.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Avoid contact with eyes.
Do not use undiluted on the skin unless otherwise advised.
