New Breast Prosthesis developed for
women with breast cancer now available in UK
BURLINGTON, April 2008 – Janac Sportswear was created in 2003, by breast cancer survivor Janet Cockburn. Born and bred in West Drayton, Middlesex Janet moved to Canada with her husband and two sons in 1981. She has designed a unique line of sportswear created for women living with the after effects of breast cancer surgery. The Janac sports bra was originally designed for women who like to workout wearing a
bra-top and has pockets for a prosthesis to be inserted. Next came the creation of the “Been-a-Boob” - a unique prosthetic insert that simulates and reacts like a real breast when exercising. The “Been-a-Boob” prosthetic is inserted into a Janac Sports bra where it is held firmly in place to mimic a natural breast. The bra can be worn as a bra-top when exercising without being hidden under a shirt. The Been-a-Boob is light and cool and can be worn in a regular mastectomy bra and also a swimsuit.
In 1995 at the age of 43, Cockburn developed breast cancer and underwent a lumpectomy followed by a mastectomy. She later discovered that it was difficult to find a good sportsbra for women who had undergone breast surgery. Janac Sportswear was created to offer the perfect solution to women survivor’s of breast cancer. “My prosthesis is called Been-a-Boob for obvious reasons – it’s going where a boob has been!” laughs Cockburn.
The Been-a-Boob is constructed of polyester & lycra material so there is no concern about puncturing or leaking as a gel prosthesis would do. The sports bra is so comfortable it can be worn anytime – exercising, gardening, decorating or doing housework. Cockburn has also designed a bra-tank, “to cover the bits some of us want to hide”.
The success of Janac Sportswear products has spread throughout the Canadian market and is now receiving a great response from British Breast Cancer Survivors. The Been-a-Boob is available in the U.K through Oops & Downes (Horsforth, Leeds), Nicola Jane (Chichester & London) and Less Bounce (Salisbury). The Sports bras are available through Less Bounce. All products are available on-line through Janac Sportswear.
