Gateshead innovating in X-ray prints

Added: (Mon Sep 24 2007)

Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital has installed three Sony FilmStation Dual Tray Imagers because of their ability to produce more economical X-ray prints and act as a useful back-up mechanism against network failure.

The hospital decided to install the FilmStations - available from the diagnostic imaging specialists, M.A.S. Medical - to save time and money because they can produce X-ray prints in less than a minute and accommodate multiple film sizes with a second input tray.

Equipped with a DICOM interface which enables the FilmStation to be connected to a hospital imaging network, its compact size allows for the device to be easily integrated into any radiology department; orientated horizontal or vertically.

The device adapts well to the busy working environment at the Gateshead hospital with its easy-to-read LCD panel, simple-to-load film and minimal maintenance requirements. It is also environmentally friendly with the Sony thermal film not containing any metal component such as silver.

The installations follow Gateshead’s purchase in April 2007 of two Sony UP-DF500 FilmStations which incorporate many of the same features as the dual tray imager, but without the second input tray.

Phil Robinson, Radiology Service Manager at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said: “Hospitals are increasingly going digital; with healthcare professionals being able to share X-rays easily via email. This of course gives faster results, but in the event of network failure the FilmStation printer is a useful back up device which allows a hard copy of an X-ray to be shared and examined. The dual film size capability also allows the printers to be used effectively across a full range of radiology procedures.”
