The menstrual period is a discharge of blood from the woman’s body, and this condition is common and normal. However, there are instances when the bleeding is not only due to the shedding of the uterine wall as is the case with menstruation. In some cases, the bleeding is due to problems in the uterus that can cause a lot of risks to a woman’s health. This condition is known as dysfunctional uterine bleeding. This is a fairly common condition among women, affecting as much as 10 percent of the female population. The bleeding originates from the uterus. Depending on the extent of the condition, dysfunctional uterine bleeding can be considered either as ovulatory or anovulatory, and has to do with whether ovulation is associated with the condition or not.
What Causes Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding?
The most common cause of dysfunctional uterine bleeding is due to an imbalance of the body’s hormones. Such imbalance creates a condition in the uterus that results in bleeding. The imbalance may be either due to an excess supply of estrogen or progesterone in the body. Other factors that cause dysfunctional uterine bleeding or those who are at greater risk are the following:
1) Women subjected to intense emotional stress are prone to having uterine bleeding.
2) Excessive exercise, especially those involving the pelvic area can also cause excessive bleeding.
3) Another factor that can contribute to dysfunctional uterine bleeding is obesity.
What Are the Manifestations of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding?
1) The easiest way to detect dysfunctional uterine bleeding is by abnormal menstrual periods. It is a common situation that a woman may have bleeding in between menstrual cycles. In some cases, a woman may have a regular menstrual cycle but one who suffers from bleeding in between menstrual periods. This is a condition that is fairly common among women but one that is usually ignored, which can be dangerous given the risks that it poses to a woman’s health.
2) There is a recurrent and frequent change of one’s menstrual cycle. While changes in the menstrual cycle is a condition common among women, the condition can be easily identified as dysfunctional uterine bleeding if the number of days in between menstrual cycles is fewer than 28 days.
3) Aside from a changing menstrual cycle, there is also a change in the amount of menstrual flow. It is common that one may experience too much menstrual flow in one period but have very little with the next. Just like with a changing menstrual cycle, this is also a fairly common problem among women but one that is also frequently ignored.
4) Another disturbing manifestation of dysfunctional uterine bleeding is the growth of body hair in a pattern similar to that of men. This condition is known as hirsutism.
5) Other manifestations of dysfunctional uterine bleeding that a woman may exhibit are tenderness of the vagina or frequent mood swings. While the latter may not cause too much harm, the former can make sexual activity painful.
