Only When I Laugh?
It is estimated that 3-6 million people in the UK have some degree of incontinence, and it is twice as common in women as men and is more so in women who have given birth. Continence is when you pass urine or faeces when you don’t mean to.
For many women who suffer stress continence they simply carry on using disposable sanitary towels, and avoid situations that involve exercise, running, jumping even sneezing or laughing can cause a leakage.
Most sufferers assume it will go away eventually but in most cases it doesn’t and become a problem for their day to day life, consideration has to be given to where the nearest toilet is, how much you drink even in some cases avoiding leaving home for any period of time including not going on holiday. In the main many cases can be cured by simple exercises, women are familiar with the Pelvic Floor exercises given to them during pregnancy but few actually do them or if they do they do them incorrectly.
At Freedom Healthcare clients are always advised to see their GP or Continence Nurse first and foremost, it’s not that we don’t want the custom but we feel it’s our responsibility to offer customers correct advice.
Freedom Healthcare started 4 years ago after its sister company Snazzypants the Cloth Nappy Shop started to get more and more calls from people needing washable continence wear, bedding etc for adults. With this in mind Kerry Newton started to research the condition to see what was really available and was shocked to discover that although there are plenty of companies selling such goods, very few actually offered solid advice to callers. Worse still there didn’t appear to be much in the way of continence items for older children up to teens. Armed with this information Kerry approached manufacturers and put together a comprehensive range of washable underwear to suit almost all needs.
Freedom Healthcare now directly supplies residential care centres for both the elderly and special needs, continence clinics, and the general public. Because Freedom Healthcare is a family run business we are sure that our staff are trained to talk with a degree of knowledge about incontinence, and to spend time making sure that we get the right product to the patient.
