Choosing Your Dentist

Many people dread going to the dentist. It’s not such a surprise because it’s not very comfortable opening your mouth for someone and letting him or her tinker with your mouth. However, it’s impossible for anyone not to go to a dentist. Your dental health is very important and it’s vital that you get the utmost care for it.
Aside from these, there are many other reasons why choosing the right dentist is not as easy as 1-2-3. No one wants to go to just about any San Diego cosmetic dentists. Just like how you choose your doctor, the credibility, efficiency, reliability, and also, your rapport are taken into consideration. Below are some tips to help you choose the right dentist.
* Referrals. Ask for referrals either from people you know or from an organization of San Diego cosmetic dentistry. Getting feedbacks from actual patients is a good way to start your list of options. Also, if you have just moved and looking for a new dentist in your area, ask for a referral from your old dentist. He or she just might know someone.
* Licensed. Whether you’re just starting your search or you have decided a list of San Diego cosmetic dentists to start with, make sure that the dentist you’re going to is licensed. He or she should hold either a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.) degree or the equivalent doctor of dental medicine (D.D.M.) degree. He or she should also have passed the board examinations for dentists. If you need a more specialized dentist like an orthodontist, endodontist, periodontist, or a prosthodontist, make sure that the dentist have also undergone the necessary training and have passed the specialty board examination. You might also want to check if the dentist is a member of professional dental associations like the American Dental Association. These organizations have certain standards for its members.
* Schedule. Each dentist has his or her own clinic schedules. Check if the dentist’s schedule would be convenient for you.
* Location. Consider also the location of the clinic to your place of residence and place of work.
* Visit. Before choosing a particular dentist, visit the clinic and try to get a feel of how it’s like inside. Is the office clean, neat, and tidy? Does it seem sanitized? Remember, things inside that clinic will be going inside your mouth, so you should be particular about the cleanliness of the whole clinic because it says a lot about how they do things. Also, are you comfortable inside the clinic? Don’t hesitate to cross a dentist off your list simply because it doesn’t feel ‘right’ whenever you’re inside the clinic.
* Rapport. This is very important but hard to determine until you’ve actually met and had a check-up. Have a trial check-up and see if you’re comfortable enough with how the dentist handles patients.
