Beat Flu with Nature’s Remedies

Recent research has demonstrated that Elderberries are active against flu. On Sunday Tim Moorhouse, Medical Herbalist, showed BBC TV Countryfile viewers how to make these into a home remedy. Tim also knows many other traditional remedies that can help fight flu.

Tim made his traditional folk remedy out of Elderberries for Julia Bradbury on Countryfile (BBC1 TV, 7pm, Sunday 25th October). In the shadow of Pendle Hill in Lancashire, famous for the trials of the Pendle Witches, he taught Julia how to concoct a syrup out of the berries, to help fight off this winters cold’s and flu’s. Whilst the weather closes in Julia tastes it and declares “Not only is it good for you, it tastes delicious!”

Recent research has shown Elderberries to be extremely effective against H1N1 strain of flu and compare favourable to the known anti-influenza activities of Tamiflu and Amantadine. *(see link below)

Tim Moorhouse, has a first class honours degree in Herbal Medicine from the University of Central Lancashire and is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (www.nimh.org.uk). He works in the Manchester and Lancashire area where he sees private patients. He is very involved in the local community and during his Herb Walks, Talks and Courses he passes on traditional herbal knowledge.

Tim has countless other herbal remedies. For example his Thyme & Onion Cough syrup or Sage honey which can also relieve flu symptoms. Many of the herbs he uses can be found growing all around us or are available retail. Like his Elderberry syrup, these remedies are easily made, often providing natural alternatives to over the counter medicines.

Tim says “What I am really passionate about is the long heritage of herbal medicine that has been practiced on these isles for centuries. I studied these traditions during my professional training and believe that there is still much to learn. As a result I am collecting and compiling oral traditions and hope to revive more of these fascinating remedies. After all, modern research into herbs continues to show what we already know, that many of these folk medicines work.”

The episode can still be seen on the BBC iPlayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00nks3x/Countryfile_25_10_2009/

Tim has recently launched his website: http://www.greenmanherbalist.co.uk
