Added: (Sat Nov 16 2013)

Pressbox (Press Release) - 16th November 2013, USA (http://www.dopharmacy.com/) : With aging, there comes reduced activity and greater dependence. Reduction in memory and cognitive function makes many older people to feel helpless. Although these cognitive consequences cannot be averted, they can be delayed with aerobic exercising and by improving physical strength-as the new research suggests.Researchers said that aerobic exercises boost brain health by causing improvement in blood supply to vital areas in the brain. Especially adults over 50 will benefit from exercising.

The duration of this study was 12 weeks. Participants had sedentary lifestyle and they belonged to age group 57 to 75. Researchers made random division of participants. Intervention group participated in training sessions that involved working out or treadmill or riding a stationary bike for one hour. They engaged in exercising for three times in a week. Participant in control group didn’t undertake any exercising activity. Participants were carefully monitored for their thinking ability, cardiovascular fitness and blood flow to the brain in the beginning middle and end of the study.

The MRI reports showed more blood flow to a specific area in brain known as anterior cingulated which is linked to superior cognitive abilities in later life. The participants also had greater blood flow to hypothalamus and showed improvements in memory.Since assessment techniques were noninvasive, researchers could not measure actual increase in blood flow. Measurement of blood flow could give more understanding of brain health.

Researchers expressed hope that this research will help to identify best measures to improve overall cognitive brain performance. Aerobic exercising will help to bring about altering of some basic structures in brain and improve overall cognitive health. Aerobic exercising combined with mental exercises may be a good strategy to prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s.
