An Herbal Tail.
In the UK last year 5 million people consulted a complementary practitioner, spending a total of £1.6 billion, and this trend is set to spread to the animal world as people are becoming accustomed to a wider range of options in their own healthcare and are starting to demand similar choices for their horses. As part of the shift in animal care practices, which is seeing an increasing integration of complementary approaches into conventional animal care, the traditional use of herbs in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry is set for resurgence. The result of this? More and more of us will be harnessing the power of herbs in the care of our animals.
Healthy Beast have been at the fore-front of this new integrated veterinary care with their “Introduction to Veterinary Herbal Medicine” courses which, for the past year, they have run exclusively for veterinary surgeons. Healthy Beast also operates an integrated small animal referral practice headed by resident vet Jimmy Symmonds MRCVS, alongside their state of the art equine rehabilitation centre. As part of their on-going mission to spread the message of integrated veterinary medicine and animal care, Healthy Beast are launching a series of one day workshops aimed at animal owners which will educate owners in the benefits which herbs can bring to their animals’ welfare.
The series, which will include workshops for dog, cat and horse owners, will be run by Healthy Beast from their idyllic base on Horsehay Farm, Middle Barton, Oxfordshire. The workshops for dog and cat owners will be titled “Dogs & Herbs!” and “Cats, an Herbal Tail” respectively, and will be lead by Melanie Faria MNIMH, medical herbalist and animal lover, while “Herbs for Horses”, which will launch the series on 15th October 2005, will be lead by Hilary Self BSc MNIMH, medical herbalist and co-founder of Hilton Herbs. The workshops will cover the when, why, how and how much to give your animal herbs and are designed to give owners the confidence to make informed decisions about herbs and the welfare of their animals.
