7 Common Dental Problems

Added: (Tue Jun 30 2009)

Not too many people regularly visit the dentist. It’s no wonder there are many common dental problems that could have been easily prevented. According to San Diego cosmetic dentists, many people dread having a dental problem because they avoid going to any dental clinic. However, a lot of people also fail to observe proper oral hygiene despite this apprehension to visit a San Diego cosmetic dentist.

According to an expert from San Diego cosmetic dentistry, many dental problems are easily preventable by brushing twice daily, flossing daily, eating properly, and having regular dental check-ups. Below are some of the common dental problems experienced by many people today.

* Tooth Decay. Also known as cavities, tooth decay is the second most prevalent disease in the United States after the common cold. Cavities develop when plaque combines with the sugars and starches of the food we eat, which produces the acids that attack tooth enamel.
* Gum Disease. This is more technically called periodontal disease. It’s an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth and causes tooth loss among adults. Gum disease is also linked to heart attacks and strokes.
* Bad Breath. Otherwise known as halitosis, is one of the most embarrassing dental problems. However, most of the time, halitosis is not the actual problem. It’s sometimes just an effect of some other dental problem like gum disease, oral cancer, cavities, and many more.
* Mouth Sores. These are pesky, bothersome, and usually last more than two weeks. Most mouth sores disappear on their own.
* Tooth Sensitivity. Many people experience pain or discomfort from sweets, cold air, hot drinks, cold drinks, or ice cream. These people have sensitive teeth.
* Oral Cancer. Unknown to many, this type of cancer is a serious and deadly disease. This cancer pertains to the mouth, lips or throat. It affects millions of people and although deadly, it is highly curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages.
* Tooth Erosion. This refers to the loss of tooth structure. It is caused by acid attacking the enamel. Signs and symptoms can be as simple as tooth sensitivity or as severe as cracking.
