Press release 1 Oct 08
5,000 year old meditation techniques now available to offer relief to stressed City workers.
Newly formed “The Third Factor” announced that it is up and ready to offer everyone an opportunity to relieve their stress and anxiety by learning ancient meditation skills at weekly lunchtime events in a beautiful church located in the heart of the Barbican Centre. Surrounded by water and fountains, the unique space offers a peaceful respite from the noise and stress of life in the City.
‘The techniques taught can be of real help in high stress circumstances’ says Vincent Baasch, founder of The Third Factor, ‘everyone can learn the basics with a bit of patience and discipline, and when practised for 10 minutes a day the results can be truly amazing.
These new lunchtime events, held weekly on Wednesday or Thursdays between 13h00 – 14h00 at St Giles, compliment The Third Factors existing business, which offers one-on-one meditation training for CEOs and senior business executives, as well as workshops for teams.
There is currently a huge swell of interest in meditation in the West, from athletes, business leaders and actors to therapists and leadership gurus. And there is credible scientific research about how meditation may be associated with physical changes in areas of the brain that are important for attention and sensory processing.
Distractibility, lack of attention, mental turbulence and an almost complete absence of silence or quiet time are all common symptoms of our high stress lives. Stress attacks our immune system, is a major cause of heart disease and speeds up the ageing process.
The aim of meditation in The Third Factor program is very simple – to quieten our minds. Through various breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques, we learn to place our attention on our breath and by placing our attention on our breath, we start to experience a quiet mind. Finding this inner silence has enormous physical, mental and emotional benefits.
‘The days of thinking that meditation is weird are long gone. Meditating is no weirder than exercising your body regularly. In fact, I like to think of meditation as a workout for your mind’ says Baasch, who emphasises that The Third Factors approach is friendly, down to earth and not aligned to any specific spiritual tradition, ‘no mantras, no chanting, no cushions and no robes. We sit on normal chairs!
Meditation made such a profound impact on the quality of my own life that I decided to give up my conventional business pursuits to put together The Third Factor program to help other people discover these benefits for themselves.
And if you’re wondering about the name The Third Factor, it’s really very simple. In our approach, meditation is the third factor, together with regular exercise and sound nutrition that will dramatically improve the quality of your life. And all it takes is 10 minutes a day. There is nothing to lose.’
