TORIES SET ANIMAL WELFARE AGENDA FOR NEXT ELECTION
Added: (Mon Feb 19 2001)
The Animal Defenders (ADs) welcomed the Conservative Party Pre-election Policy Document ‘Protecting Our Animals’, published today, which sets their animal welfare agenda for the next election.
One of the most important promises, amongst a raft of new ideas, is the undertaking to bring circuses under the 1981 Zoo Licensing Act (ZLA).
The ADs has been calling for an end to animal circuses and for the performing animal training centres to be drawn under the Act, since our undercover investigation exposed the reality of animal circuses.
The Labour Government have failed to draw circuses under the ZLA as promised in their pre election leaflet and now the Conservatives have effectively moved the debate forward.
The AD’s calls upon Labour and the Liberal Democrats to now respond with a similar policy.
Jan Creamer, Director of the ADs, said today, ‘We are delighted by this news. There is strong parliamentary support for circuses to be brought under the ZLA, and we are glad the Conservatives are listening and acting on our findings from our investigation. We are also glad they have noticed that public enjoyment should not be at the expense of animal welfare.’
Ends.
