THE DAY THE MAGNA CARTA WAS REPEALED

"THE DAY THE MAGNA CARTA WAS REPEALED"

Libertarians and Civil Liberty campaigners were dismayed by the Government's narrow commons victory to extend Detention without trial to 42 days.

Despite even the government accepting that no previous case has required a hypothetical extension from the existing 28 days, the bill was pushed through by the use of the Labour Whip and backroom deals.

National Liberal Party National Secretary David Durant said "This is another step towards a Big Brother society. There was no need to extend such powers except to make Gordon Brown look 'tough'. Veteran Labour MP Tony Benn echoed our feelings with his reaction "I never thought I would be in the House of Commons on the day Magna Carta* was repealed".
Ironically this Sunday 15th June sees the anniversary of the signing of that document and re-iterates the need to guard our precious liberties"

* On the 15th June the NLP have organised a Liberty Moneybomb to raise funds to make liberty a future electoral issue see http://www.15thjunemagnacarta.org
