Respect Candidates in the High Peak

High Peak Respect to Stand Two Local Candidates in Howard Town and Simmondley By-Elections and Election Campaign Launch on Saturday 21st August 2004.

Glossop, High Peak, Derbyshire. Friday 20th August 2004

High Peak Respect have selected two candidates to fight for the High Peak Borough Council seats of Howard Town in Glossop and Simmondley on Thursday 16th September 2004.

The Respect candidates are:-

Gayle Shaw: Howard Town, Glossop

Gayle is a well known Glossop campaigner and anti-war activist. She is also a retired social worker and ex Unison Senior Steward for the High Peak area of Derbyshire County Council. Gayle is a veteran of the anti-Vietnam war movement in the United States.

Mike Aldridge: Simmondley

Mike is a Glossop campaigner and anti-war activist. He is a long standing GMB shop steward in Transco and works in the High Peak area.

Respect are launching the campaign with an election campaign stall and leaflet this Saturday 21st August in the market arcade, Glossop town centre, between 10am and 2pm. The aim of the stall is to inform local people of what Respect stands for and what they intend to do if elected. High Peak Respect expect a good turnout with leaflets, banners and supporters providing local people with information about the election and the two Respect candidates. The two candidates Gayle and Mike may also put in an appearance in order to meet local people and to hear their concerns.

There will be opportunities for photographs and Respect members will be happy to discuss the aims of Respect-The Unity Coalition and provide you with other campaign details. If this story is not able to be covered then photographs can be provided after the event if you want to consider publishing an article using photographs.

1) Respect-The Unity Coalition was formed at a 1,500 strong meeting in London on 25th January 2004. It currently has one Member of Parliament and several councillors.

2) High Peak Branch of Respect was formed at a public meeting held on 11th May 2004 in Glossop. It is less than 4 months old in the High Peak.
