Pupils Plant New Tree To Mark School’s 75th Birthday
Added: (Tue Sep 22 2009)
The Mayor of Hailsham Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden joined staff and pupils of Grovelands Community Primary School in the planting of an oak tree within the school grounds on Friday 2nd October.
The new tree, which stands in the grounds at the front of the school, was kindly donated by ESK in Eastbourne and was planted to mark the 75th birthday of the school. The youngest and eldest pupils of the school, Elliott Richards and Alex Robinson swapped pens for spades on the day to undertake the planting.
The school has a history going back to 1934 when it was first established and they moved to their spacious new premises in 1996. A number of events were organised earlier this year to celebrate the school’s 75th year, including three school discos and a summer fete held in June which was a resounding success for all concerned.
Head Teacher Marion Lace said: “Everyone agreed that the best place to plant the oak tree would be in the school grounds, as a lasting memorial to commemorate the birthday of Grovelands Community Primary School. As a symbol of growth and strength, the planting of the tree enabled pupils to reflect on the school’s 75-year history, whilst at the same time involving them in taking care of their local environment.”
Town Mayor Ian Haffenden said: “This is an exciting time for the school to mark this particular milestone. Having an oak tree planted is very special for both staff and pupils, and will make a living, lasting contribution to the school’s landscape.”
He added: “Grovelands School has served the Hailsham community well over the past 75 years and there are many children in the school whose parents, grandparents and even great grandparents attended.”
