Public Consultation Meeting on Traffic Calming in Covingham, Swindon
Added: (Wed Nov 22 2006)
Pressbox (Press Release) -
There will be two public consultation meetings arranged by Cllr Glenn Smith (Conservative, Covingham and Nythe) and run by the Swindon Borough Council Highways team, to discuss the traffic calming measures in Covingham.
These will be held at St Pauls Church, Covingham on Friday 24th November 5-9pm and Saturday 25th November 9.30am-4pm.
Local residents are welcome to drop in for an informal chat, or to simply complete a questionnaire on what they like and do not like about the scheme.
Following the meeting, a report of the results will be produced and a new design for the scheme drawn up based on the comments. Then another meeting in March will be held to show the residents the proposed changes.
This follows many years of complaints from the public on the scheme that was installed against their wishes in 2002/2003. During this period there has been considerable media attention in both the local and regional press. Since Cllr Glenn Smith’s election in May 2003, he has successfully managed to have removed the humps on Covingham Drive and had additional measures installed across Covingham. This is what should be the final chapter in resolving the issues that remain.
Cllr Glenn Smith says, “It is vital that residents take this opportunity to come and discuss the scheme, telling the Council what they like and do not like about it. Unlike the original ‘consultation’ that occurred this process I have started is driven around listening and responding the local wishes of residents.”
Swindon Borough Council is currently undertaking a Borough wide review of traffic calming and through Cllr Glenn Smith’s persistence has chosen to use Covingham as a case study area for the rest of the Borough.
