Paul Marsden MP abuses power and position to seduce

"You do know what you have missed?
Us making love all night on a bed strewn with rose petals. "

Paul Marsden MP To Dr Rita Pal 12 April 2002 01:09

Dr Rita Pal describes Paul Marsden, the beleaguered MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, as a "hungry vulture", and a "sexual predator" who selects his target and renders them "powerless with his charm". She believes that nothing is too much in his quest to conquor the women he desires, though also concedes that there are plenty of women for whom his power, money and fame were sufficient to encourage a loosening of the knicker elastic. Indeed Marsden himself admits he is just a "weak, flawed man with a very high sex drive" (Sent 29th July 2002).

During his recent interview with the Sunday Times, Paul Marsden, described the House of Commons as a "hotbed of drug and alcohol fuelled intrigue". He claimed that intoxicated MPs "stalk the corridors of power late into the night, seeking sexual encounters with an ever-willing army of nubile young researchers".

For anyone who has ever nodded off while watching yet another dreary debate on the Parliament channel, this description may seem somewhat surreal. In the experience of Dr. Rita Pal though, she believes it is a pretty accurate description of the way Mr Marsden himself has spent his time at the heart of British government.

As a passionate and committed junior doctor, Rita Pal exposed some of the ill treatment of the elderly within the NHS in an article published in the Sunday Times, 2nd April 2000. Her first contact with Marsden was writing an email in an attempt to gain his help as a prominent MP. Unlike many other MP's Marsden replyed and even suggested they meet.

Mr Marsden's invitation to meet him was to be the first of many, and set the stage for their future communications. Pal later found out though, when he described her "beautiful hair" and "pretty smile" in an email, that he had seen her photograph in the news article and was the sole reason he had ever contacted her. Long black hair and white teeth where therefore the two key issues in bringing elderly care in the NHS to Marsden's attention. Dr Rita Pal now wonders why the "needless death of many elderly NHS patients did not draw his attention on its own merits".

An intense and personal correspondence began between the two where "he would ring me most days". Marsden created an exciting political persona that interested Pal. He made bold statements such as "when Iraq is attacked I will intervene on Blair, seize the mace (which means all business in the Commons has to end) and storm out.... Michael foot and Michael Hesletine did it in their younger days and the place needs to be spiced up".

Marsden's emails soon started to take a more sexual, flirtatious tone. Offers to take her out increased, but their correspondence really came to a head, so to speak, when Paul Marsden called Dr. Pal from his hotel room. This conversation however was unlike any previous as his manner become progressively sexual and provocative. Dr. Pal asked him to stop as it was upsetting her, but Marsden "paid no heed, instead opting to take his desires in 'hand'". To her utter amazement he "did what he needed to do" and promptly fell asleep on the phone leaving Dr Pal completely "flabbergasted". She now admits that "in hindsight, my association with Paul should have ended there and then" but confesses that Marsden's manner was truly "seductive and charming" and persuaded her to salvage their friendship. She later realised that Paul Mardsden had only become so devastatingly proficient in the art of seduction through relentless practise.

Their relationship took an even more sordid turn when Paul Marsden propositioned her. Although he had initially been reluctant to assist Rita Pal in the aftermath of her 'whistle blowing' episode, it seemed that he was now more than happy to take her concerns to Parliament if she paid him with her affection, and her passion. Dr Pal felt as though she would basically have to sell her "body to parliamentary science".

Dr Rita Pal now feels "hurt, degraded and betrayed". Their correspondence slowly died away as Paul Marsden realised that his advances towards Rita Pal were failing. In turn Pal began to understand that the friendship that she had worked so hard to save now meant nothing to Mr Marsden. All of their correspondence including his galant acts in parliament and promises to aid her campaign could have simply been a ruse, a weapon in his gigolo's armoury to seduce her.
