New Projects Outlined For Hailsham In Bloom
Added: (Tue Oct 20 2009)
Still celebrating after clinching a Silver Gilt Award in the Large Town/Small City category at last month’s South & South East In Bloom awards, the Hailsham In Bloom team have outlined a number of new and interesting projects for the next twelve months, some of which will require community assistance. The main projects proposed are:
• Creation of Orchard & Sensory Garden
The design and formation of a combined orchard and ‘sensory garden’ (site yet to be agreed). A newly created sensory garden would be of considerable benefit to blind and visually impaired people, as well as the elderly.
• Town Gateway Floral Markers
Based on recent feedback from the public, the installment of a second tier to the existing town entry structures, to increase their overall impact.
• Tree Planting & Avenue Creation
Following the success of last year’s tree planting campaign in St Mary’s Avenue, an additional avenue of trees will be created (exact road yet to be agreed).
• Town Crest/Twinning Floral Display
A town centre floral feature in the shape of the Gournay-en-Bray’s town crest, concurrent with a floral feature depicting Hailsham’s town crest in Gournay-en-Bray’s town centre. European funding for this project is currently being sought.
• Creation of Flower Nursery
The construction of a polythene tunnel flower nursery within the grounds of Marshlands Primary School, in which pupils can plant seeds and maintain all developing plants for future planting at a number of sites within the town.
• Spring Bulb Planting
An additional 10,000 spring bulbs to be planted at various sites within Hailsham in November, including South Road, Western Road, North Street, town centre planters and parts of Magham Down.
• Wildflower Meadow at Hailsham Country Park
The continuation of the existing wildflower restoration project and the creation of a second wildflower meadow close to Wentworth Pond.
A number of smaller projects have also been outlined for 2010, including the creation of a bee shelter at Hailsham Country Park, the tidying of one or more ‘twittens’ within the town, and the repainting of the recycling-themed murals at Victoria Road and Vicarage Field car park.
Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, Deputy Town Mayor and chairman of the Hailsham In Bloom committee said: “A lot of hard work has gone into Hailsham in Bloom over the past twelve months and the town’s Silver Gilt Award was the culmination of all our endeavours. There are plenty of new projects we will be carrying out from now until next summer, and continuations of existing ones into different areas of the town.”
“Not only do we look forward to raising vital funds via donations and sponsorships, but we are still actively seeking new volunteers who will be able to assist us with these projects and make Hailsham even brighter.”
Members of the public are free to attend the fortnightly committee meetings held at the Town Council Offices, to offer their suggestions. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 28th October at 7.30pm in the Members’ Room (Town Council Offices, Inglenook, Market Street).
