Markland Technologies Announces Participation in Smart Border Alliance Team
RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - June 22, 2004 - Markland Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: MRKL - http://www.marklandtech.com) an integrated homeland security company, announced today that it is a member of the Smart Border Alliance Team which was recently selected by the Department of Homeland Security to design and implement the United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT) program. The US-VISIT program was created to improve the security of U.S. citizens and visitors, expedite legitimate travel and trade, ensure the integrity of the immigration system, and safeguard the personal privacy of visitors and immigrants.
The Smart Border Alliance team has been selected to help develop and implement a new entry/exit system to be deployed at the nation's air, land and sea points of entry for biometric and other technologies in order to check identities of foreign visitors to America. The U.S. Congress has mandated that US-VISIT compatible systems must be deployed at the top 50 U.S. land points of entry by December 31, 2004 and that US-VISIT compatible systems must be deployed at over 100 additional points of entry by mid 2005. Markland expects to be asked to install and maintain systems at these land border points of entry under this program.
Markland has unique experience with the system currently installed at five land border ports, named SENTRI. US Visit contemplates a system very similar to this to be implemented at all land border crossings. At this time, Markland does not know the total value of potential work that may be awarded to it under this program nor does Markland known the timing of any such awards.
Markland Technologies provides border logistic services to the Department of Homeland Security through its subsidiary, Ergo Systems, Inc.
"We are very excited about the potential value of this award to Markland shareholders," said Markland President, Ken Ducey. "We look forward to utilizing Markland's experience to expand and enhance the technologies at the borders. The combination of Markland's experience and personnel the other Smart Border Alliance Team members will provide for exciting possibilities to make our borders more secure, and make our country safer. There is a tremendous amount that must be completed, and this is important first step to this multi-year task."
