MAGNA CARTA DAY- IS IT RECOGNISED?
The Magna Carta Day Moneybomb www.15thjunemagnacarta.org, recently launched by the National Liberal Party, has provoked renewed interest in this ancient document.
Signed by King John on June 15th at Runnymede in 1215 it was the first time a King formerly recognised that his subjects had 'rights'. The National Liberal Party has invoked its image to highlight the modern day threats to liberty e.g. National ID Cards, Surveillance cameras, DNA records etc.
NLP National Secretary David Durant said "One upon a time the Magna Carta was discussed in all schools as part of the curriculum. Despite it being ignored of late even in 2006 the Magna Carta topped a BBC Poll as the best date to celebrate "Britishness"*. More than ever we need to celebrate one of the things that made us great - the recognition of LIBERTY!"
The NLP are running a Liberty Moneybomb asking people to pledge a donation on Magna Carta - 15th June (also see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5wt5j-iLyw)
