Hailsham Mayor To Support Bonfire Celebrations

Added: (Tue Oct 06 2009)

Hailsham Town Council is pleased to be supporting the annual Guy Fawkes Celebrations on Saturday 17th October, organised by the Hailsham Bonfire Society and local residents, who have once again contributed to this popular commemoration.

A fun outing for all the family, there will be a Grand Torchlight Procession commencing in Western Road at 7.15pm, which will then go onto South Road and pass through Station Road, Bell Banks Road, Market Street, before entering the lower end of the High Street.

There will be a short stop at the town centre War Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony, where the Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden will provide a short speech. This will be followed by the second procession, which will return to the Hailsham Bonfire Society’s headquarters in Western Road via Vicarage Lane, Vicarage Road, George Street and South Road.

The procession will then reform and move on to the firesite at the Leisure Centre via the High Street and Vicarage Lane for the Traditional Cry and Grand Firework Display.

A rolling road closure order will be in operation on the procession route.

Proceeds from the various street collections will go to the Children with Cancer, St Wilfrid’s Hospice and St John Ambulance Funds.

Town Mayor Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden will present the trophies for the best fancy dress costume competition at 8.15pm, which will take place outside the Hailsham Memorial Institute.

Commenting on the event, Cllr Haffenden said:

“Hailsham Bonfire Society has put together yet another exciting schedule of events to celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night this year. It promises to be a great evening out for all the family and will give a generous cash boost to a range of local charities and good causes.”
