Added: (Thu Sep 24 2009)
It was summer glory all the way at the presentation of awards for the Hailsham In Bloom local competitions on Wednesday 23rd September.
Winning competition entrants received their prizes from committee members and invited guests, and were praised for their efforts in keeping Hailsham in superb bloom at a special presentation evening held at the Town Council Offices.
All residential entrants were presented with certificates and rosettes, and category winners were also presented with unique salvers or cups, while commercial entrants were presented with plaques for their overall contribution.
This year’s winners were:
Best Kept Front Garden: Mr B. Cousens
Best Allotment: Mr P. Scrivens and Mrs Tillyer (joint first)
Best Business Premises: Tesco
Best Public House Display: The King’s Head
Hailsham Heritage Award: Sussex IFA Ltd (Downford House)
Guests of honour included the Mayor of Hailsham Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden, Wealden District Council Chairman Cllr Sylvia Martin and Mrs Christine Simms, winner of last year’s Best Front Garden competition.
Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, chairman of the Hailsham In Bloom Committee and hosting the presentation, said: “I am really proud that residents and businesses have come forward again this year and entered the various local competitions we currently organise.”
“We heartily commend those who do take time and care of their gardens and premises in order to make the town look even better. It's all this hard work which really gives a sense of community pride which has been so capably demonstrated in many areas of Hailsham this year. Well done everybody.”
The committee’s vice-chairman, Cllr John Puttick, said:
Local competition judges have been busy judging competition entrants across the town over the past few months, from householders to allotment holders and businesses to community groups. These individual competition awards recognise the efforts of the local community in improving the town’s landscape and providing a quality environment to live in.”
“I hope even more people all over the town will enter these competitions next year.”
