If the sun comes out on August bank holiday and you fancy a cooling ice cream, spare a thought for Charles II…We have him to thank for introducing us to the country’s favourite dessert.
It was summer, in 1671, when his French chef came up with the first ever ice cream served in the UK. The king liked it so much he offered the creative cook a pension of £500 a year to keep the recipe secret. Fortunately it leaked out and we’ve been lapping it up ever since.
It might have been around now for 333 years, but variety is the spice of life and new recipes are still being created. Two of the latest are delicious ones from award-winning yogurt company Yeo Valley Organic -- a choice of delicious, creamy organic Vanilla Ice or refreshing Frozen Strawberry Yogurt. Both offer cool, natural, refreshing luxury, yet at down to earth prices.
They are made exclusively from rich organic milk and cream and all the flavour comes from the purest natural ingredients, so the Madagascar vanilla in the ice cream and the Tioga and Senga strawberries used in the frozen yogurt are from carefully selected organic plantations and orchards, farmed without the use of chemicals fertilisers and other sprays. This helps give these ices a much ‘cleaner’, more natural flavour.
Today many ice creams are made with ingredients such as emulsifiers, colourants, non-dairy fats, synthetic flavours and preservatives, which all have an effect on their taste and are just the type of things that even today’s Prince Charles often speaks out against!
If you fancy a dish of pure indulgence for the holiday weekend you’ll find Yeo Valley’s take on ice cream in Saindbury’s and its tangy Frozen Yogurt on sale at Waitrose stores. The price, just £2.99 for a 1 litre tub of the ice cream and £1.99 for a 500ml pot of the Frozen Strawberry Yogurt is £1.99 for a 500ml pack. A small price to pay for a holiday treat with such a royal history!
