Entries Now Accepted For 2010 Hailsham In Bloom Competitions

Added: (Wed Oct 14 2009)

The Town Council’s Hailsham in Bloom committee is now searching for the town’s most attractive gardens, floral displays, allotments, business premises and community schemes for the 2010 entry into the South & South East in Bloom competition.

Many of the town’s residents and community groups are proud of their horticultural achievements, and the ‘Hailsham in Bloom’ organisers would like to hear from anyone who wishes to flaunt their horticultural and ecological handiwork.

Entries are now being invited to the annual Hailsham in Bloom local garden competitions, with a variety of categories to involve the whole town. Cash prizes will also be up for grabs for competition winners, details of which will be announced in the near future.

This year, there are five local competition categories:

• Best Kept Front Garden (in conjunction with Environment Hailsham)
Front gardens of any size which are regularly maintained, have a wide variety of plants and colour combinations, and look tidy overall.

• Best Kept Allotment (in conjunction with Hailsham Horticultural Society)
Providing evidence of hard work that allotment holders put into their plots, including use of recycling and sustainable methods for gardening and the quality of crops grown.

• Best Wildlife Garden (in conjunction with Environment Hailsham)
Gardens which encourage wildlife: insects, birds and small mammals.

• Best Business Premises
Open to businesses in Hailsham, including shops, restaurants, hotels and industrial units, whose decorated frontage contains an attractive floral display or well-maintained garden.

• Best Public House Display
Open to all pubs in Hailsham and its environs whose frontage contains an attractive floral display or well-maintained garden.

For those who wish to enter one or more of the above competitions, entry forms are available at the Town Council Offices (Inglenook, Market Street) or online at www.hailshaminbloom.org, although some entrants (including Town Council owned allotment plots) will be entered incognito. Entry for all competition categories is free of charge.

The closing date for entries is Friday 18th June 2010. Winners of each category will be notified shortly after the closing date and some of the individual winners will be selected to help form part of the town’s official judging route(s) after this notification. An official Awards Presentation will be held in early September of next year.

Deputy Town Mayor and Chairman of Hailsham In Bloom, Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, urges as many people to take part in the competitions as possible:

“Hailsham’s success in the South & South East In Bloom campaign over the past two years has raised the profile of the town considerably, working with the community and fostering a real sense of community spirit and local pride.”

“By running these local garden competitions as part of this campaign, we can help encourage all areas of the Hailsham community to participate in the regeneration of our town and contribute to its aesthetic enhancement and local environmental quality improvement for both residents and visitors alike.”

“Whatever your gardening speciality, there is at least one category to suit you - and no excuse for not entering!”
