You Have a 1 in 4 Chance of Having a Bad Experience Buying a Property in Spain

Manilva, Spain 18 April 2006. A survey of its members recently conducted by Eye on Spain (www.eyeonspain.com), the forum website for Spanish property buyers, found that as many as a quarter of off plan property purchasers in Spain feel unhappy or very unhappy with the whole property buying experience and their estate agent.
“For most people, buying a property in Spain is about realising their dreams,” said Justin Aldridge, Managing Director of Eye on Spain. “However, it seems that for so many the buying process in Spain is disillusioning”. The results of the survey seem to indicate that estate agents can negatively affect the whole buying experience.
Of the 4859 members asked to participate, 586 completed the survey. 65% of respondents were female and around 50 years old. 84% currently reside in the UK. 65% of respondents stated that they were buying off plan and waiting for their property to be completed, whilst 26% already owned a property in Spain. 48% are buying a property for a holiday home, 27% for investment and a surprisingly high 25% for a permanent move to Spain.
“Unsurprisingly the majority of respondents were in their 50s, probably purchasing a property by releasing equity in their homes,” said Susan Pedalino, Editor of Eye on Spain’s newsletter, Eye Spy Spain. “Nearly a quarter of respondents are planning to live permanently in Spain, which I assume will be for retirement. Spain has so much to offer in terms of lifestyle, not just the great weather.”
Regarding the ‘buying experience’ 21% were indifferent leaving just 55% happy or very happy. As many as 24% were not happy or not happy at all, which is almost on a par with the 27% who were not happy or not happy at all with their agent.
“It would seem that choosing the wrong estate agent will hugely influence your experience of buying a property in Spain,” said Justin. “Having spent many years planning to buy in Spain, people should ensure they carry out the necessary due diligence on their estate agent, not be rushed into anything and try to enjoy what should be an exciting build up period in their lives.”
