A Scottish winter break

Added: (Tue Dec 30 2008)

Treat yourself to a highland fling this winter and spend a few days skiing, snowboarding, and soaking up some winter sun in the Scottish mountains. The Highlands are at their most impressive in the winter months, when silky snow blankets stark rocky outcrops and smoke rises from the hearths of cosy chalets.

A drive through this magnificent scenery is a must for anyone visiting the country. Load up the car with hot drinks, a warming winter picnic, an extra blanket and take along your breakdown and car insurance documents and take a drive into the wild. Car insurance companies usually offer a breakdown cover option.

The roads are generally safe, but winter ice and snow can make the roads slippery, so pay attention to the road. If a view is particularly breathtaking, then pull over in a secure spot to admire it safely.

Its best to pick your accommodation based on the types of activities you plan to partake in while you are on holiday. A quite chalet far from the skiing crowds is best for a romantic break, while an organised hotel may be better for sightseeing and great dinners. For sporting activities look for accommodation with space to hang all your ski and snowboard equipment.

For Christmas and New Year’s celebrations there are plenty of lovely destinations, from loch side hunting lodges to modern bed and breakfast homes. Celebrate the season with a wee pint of hand pulled beer or a dram or two of the best aged whisky, while you put your feet up in front of a roaring log fire or dance the night away at a local ceidligh.
