World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship to be Decided Across Michigan This June
Added: (Thu May 26 2005)
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The American Wrestling Association, one of the most well-known and well-respected wrestling organizations in the world, announced today that its World Heavyweight Champion will be defending his title across the state of Michigan this June.
Takao Omori, fresh off of a series of impressive title defenses in Tokyo, will battle his way across the state during the weekend of June 10, 11, and 12. The cities of Waldron, Bay City, and Mt. Clemons, Michigan, will witness the first AWA World Championship matches in the Great Lake State in nearly two decades.
The AWA World Champion’s credentials speak for themselves. Takao Omori is a multi-time All Asia tag team champion, a former WLW champion, and even participated in the 1996 Royal Rumble match. His “Axe Bomber” – a powerful clothesline off the ropes – has achieved world renown for its punishing impact and its effectiveness. This will be Omori’s first visit to the United States since winning the world championship earlier this year.
However, this series of matches will be no leisurely exhibition for the champion. Omori’s opponent for the first two nights of the tour is an old foe with whom there is no love lost. Steve Corino, a native of Sea Isle, New Jersey, has had a longstanding feud with Omori. Omori beat Corino to win the vacant AWA World Championship in January 2005 in Tokyo. Two months later, after another successful title defense by Omori, Corino stormed the ring and attacked the champion, disrespecting Omori and mocking the sold-out crowd in Tokyo before order was restored. By defeating G.Q. Gallo at an AWA live event in April, Steve Corino was named the number-one contender for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and will seek vindication for his earlier losses to Takao Omori.
“We are excited to bring the AWA World Heavyweight Championship to the great state of Michigan,” said Dale Gagne, President of the AWA. “The American Wrestling Association has been committed to showcasing the best talent in professional wrestling for over four decades. We’re proud to continue this tradition today and bring wrestling and excitement to wrestling fans all across Michigan this June.”
This series of title defenses is sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association and is proudly presented by AWA Michigan (promoter Brian Maday).
