SBC's STERLING COMMERCE NAMES CHIEF DELIVERY OFFICER

New role to focus on continued delivery of top-notch customer satisfaction and timely development of e-business solutions

London, 8th November 2001 - Sterling Commerce, a subsidiary of SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC) and one of the world’s leading providers of e-business solutions for global corporates, today announced the appointment of Samuel R. Starr as Chief Delivery Officer (Electronic photography available).

Starr has been drafted in to this newly created position to focus on the continued development and delivery of Sterling Commerce's e-business integration and community development products and services. The position was created to consolidate management of all Sterling Commerce departments that are directly responsible for customer satisfaction.

"This appointment is part of our ongoing effort to maintain a corporate structure that allows us to quickly and completely address our customers' evolving e-business needs," said Sterling Commerce President and CEO Mark Keiffer. "In his new position, Sam will play a critical role in ensuring that the company is always on the right track, both in delivering the right products and services for customers today, and in consistently identifying and developing future opportunities for growth."

Starr will oversee the company's Customer Support, Information Technology and Development departments, as well as the company's Enterprise Project Management Office.
Starr previously served as Executive Vice-President of Development for Sterling Commerce, where he managed the company's research and development organisation and played an instrumental role in strategic planning. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the information technology industry, including development, systems engineering, consulting, systems architecture, hardware/software solutions and technology planning.

Before joining Sterling Commerce in 2000, Starr was Principal Architect for Bank One Corporation, where he charted the company's technology strategy and served as technical advisor for its internet home banking solution. Prior to that, he was Chief Technology Officer for Claremont Technology Group Inc. Starr is an alumnus of The Ohio State University.
