Inaugural SongWork Interview Looks At Career Tips & The Changing Industry

New York, NY -- August 20, 2001 -- Music industry e-Journal MusicDish features its inuagural interview in the recently launched songwriting industry column SongWork with Curb/Magnatone Music Publishing Creative Director Tommy Williams. Anne Freeman, founder of The Aspriring Songwriter SongWork Associate Editor, met with Tommy Williams at his office on the famed Music Row, to discuss career steps for aspiring songwriters and leads where they can find help. Tommy lets readers into what he looks for in potential staff songwriters, the changing business practices in light of the changing music industry, the rising song bar and hopes for a musical renaissance.

Excerpt on demo from unsigned songwriters: "The song bar has just been raised so high now, because there are fewer artists cutting songs. Record labels have been consolidated and a lot mid-level artists have lost their record deals. There are so few slots to get on, so we have to have a dynamite song. But that’s the toughest part; the song just has to be great. If the song is great, if it moves me, it can just be on a cassette tape. There are so many really good songs. I hate to say that because I want writers to keep trying, but they don’t have to spend a lot of money on a demo, I don’t think."

About Tommy Williams and Curb/Magnatone Music Publishing: Tommy began his publishing career in 1990 at EMI Music Publishing where he worked in the tape room for two years. In 1992, he joined Little Shop of Morgansongs as Professional Manager for a 5-year stint. During that period he garnered cuts, including "I Swear" that became a #1 hit for John Michael Montgomery and a worldwide pop smash for R&B group All-4-One; three Patty Loveless cuts, including a #1 with "Here I Am"; singles by Dan Seals and Irish rockers - The Berra McNeils; plus many other major label and custom album cuts. In 1997, Tommy joined Magnatone Music Publishing as Creative Director. In January of 1999 Magnatone went into a partnership with Mike Curb to form Curb/Magnatone Music Publishing. The company has enjoyed cuts by artists such as Mindy McCready, Ricochet, Shelby Lynne, Kenny Rogers, Billy Montana, and Sherrie Austin, including number one singles by Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw and Ty Herndon. Tommy says, "I'm always looking for unique songs that stand out lyrically and/or melodically. It's tougher than ever getting cuts on projects. The song bar has been raised. I'm in search of that next killer song."
