Ghost Hunting Event At Redworth Hall, Newton Aycliffe, Durham With Simply Ghost Nights - 11th March

Added: (Wed Feb 01 2012)

Pressbox (Press Release) - This Jacobean mansion would make the ideal setting for a horror movie. Set in a remote location on the outskirts of Newton Aycliffe surrounded by 40 acres of windswept moor land. Built in the 17th Century it is now a listed building.

Many ghost stories and sightings have been reported and documented over the years and featured in many Ghost books. The most famous being that of the cruelty of Redworth's 18th century landowner, Lord Surtees, who was so cruel towards his mentally ill child he kept the child chained to the fireplace and whose cries of anguish can still be heard to this day.

It also tells the story of the peer's affair with his scullery maid, who committed suicide by throwing herself down the staircase when his wife discovered she was pregnant.

The Surtees family lived at Redworth until the death in 1955 of Henry SB Surtees high sherrif in 1929. The Hall then became a residential school before finally being transformed into this luxurious hotel.

There is also the story of Lady Catherine who commited suicide over 200 years ago by throwing herself from the tower.
Come and join us on our maiden voyage to this grand building where we have access to most areas including the eerie cellers and air raid shelter.
