BMI & MusicDish Take A Look At Showcases In Latest Songwriting Report
New York, NY -- May 30, 2002 -- "Ask not what performing rights organizations can do for you, but what you can do for yourself with their help." This was one of the themes struck by "Getting Heard Above the Noise," MusicDish's 5th installment in the Songwriters in the New Millennium series, as the report takes an in-depth look at how BMI is using showcases "to create a songwriter's community, where musicians can try out new material, find collaborators, and quite possibly, get the contract or publishing deal."
Written by Steven Mirkin, whose works have appeared in the New York Times, Variety, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, the chapter provides an overview of the various showcases organized by BMI, from the BMI New Music Nights to The Collaborator's Connection to the Urban Hang to London showcases, and more. Beyond the showcase events, the feature contrasts the challenges encountered in different music cities, from NY and LA, Atlanta and Nashville, London to Miami.
"Both anecdotal evidence or market research point to the same fact: many songwriters simply don't realize or take advantage of the many opportunities provided by PROs like BMI," explains MusicDish editor Eric de Fontenay. "These organizations offer much more than a royalty check and we were pleased to work with BMI to highlight just one way in which this is true."
"BMI has always been about the songwriter and composer, and we're pleased to be included in this songwriter report. We've worked very hard over the years to develop showcases, workshops and seminars geared towards meeting the needs of our writers, and we've had great success with these projects. A number of writers and artists can point to their participation in these as an important element in launching a career, and we feel that these programs have filled an area that writers from around the world have needed access to. We're proud to help our writers in hosting and creating these events," said Del Bryant, BMI's Senior VP Performing Rights & Writer Relations.

About Getting Heard Above the Noise
Open mics and showcases have become important career tools for any aspiring and performing songwriter. An open mic is synonymous with "open stage" where any songwriter/musician can go up on stage and perform for the audience. In contrast, music showcases provide songwriters and bands an opportunity to perform in front of a panel of music industry representatives for various types of prizes and recognition. This report is meant to familiarize the reader with these forums to expose their works and steps to maximize their benefits.
