Pressbox (Press Release) -
Local artists set to shine as Dubomedy turns 3.
In just three short years of existence, hundreds of student dancers, writers and budding comedians have passed through the Dubomedy Arts School Programs. Thousands of laughs and roaring applause support Dubomedy as they work closely with the community to create original productions all while cultivating “homegrown talent”.
It is hard to believe that in a journey of only three years it’s co-directors; Mina Liccione (Broadway and MTV Veteran, Award winning American Comedienne, Tap Dancer and Educator) and Ali Al Sayed (Local Stand Up Comic, OSN Producer and Presenter) have grown from a single comedy class of 12 students to more than 120 students spanning over 8 classes for this past term. The end of session Student Showings have grown more and more popular as audiences flock to the laughter. Our most recent student showing, “Mix Tape: Student Comedy and Tap Dance Special”, reached it maximum capacity and many people were turned away. “When we grow the community grows” said Ali Al Sayed commenting on the full house show.
Dubomedy has become the host and home to local talent as the only Comedy and NYC Tap & Body Percussion Training School in the MENA Region. Dubomedy brings a completely different formula to the mix of Dubai’s Urban Arts Community. When asked what’s the connection between the two, Mina Liccione said “ It’s not just about building an arts community, it’s about building a culture. An Urban Arts Culture intertwines dance, music, writing and comedy. Our two cornerstones are laughs and beats alongside education and the creation of performance opportunities for local artists. All of the arts are connected as the root beneath is the same; passion.” This passion has also created more specialized courses like “From the Page to the Stage”, and “Learn to speak Emirati”.
Some of Dubomedy’s achievements include providing on-going professional training in stand up comedy, writing, tap dancing, circus skills, improvisation, arabic comedy, learn to speak Emirati courses, comedic acting for television as well as Workshops with very special guest artists such as Celebrity Comedian Dean Obeidallah and Saad Haroon. Dubomedy created numerous performance opportunities for local artists such as Funny Girls (the first all female comedy show in the region), Dubomedy Sole Steppers (first and only professional tap and body percussion troupe in the region), Monday Night Funnies (the first weekly comedy and variety show in the UAE). In 2010 Dubomedy gave birth to their First Annual Dubomedy International Performing Arts Festival and the Clowns Who Care Project which is a volunteer initiative where artists perform and visit centers for children with special needs in hopes of brightening their day and adding more joy to their lives. Ali Al Sayed and Mina Liccione were most recently chosen as Dubai’s Comedy Couple as part of Ahlan’s Hot 100 of 2011. “We have a vision, everything we do comes from the heart and we love every moment of it. It is more important to us to pioneer something than do what everybody else is doing because if we don’t, what difference are we making? What are we bringing to the table?” added Ali Al Sayed.
On none other than April Fool’s Day, Dubomedy will officially turn 3. “We love that our birthday is on April 1st because every year we get to celebrate it with the rest of the world! It’s a celebration of humor, comedy and laughter!” says Liccione.
Dubomedy believes that the best way to celebrate their birthday is by showing appreciation to the community that has grown and supported them over the last three years. Al Sayed said “We’ve invited former and current students and guest artists to attend a very special pre-show Dubomedy Arts Recognition and Award Ceremony as part of our 3rd Birthday Celebration. It’s our way of saying thank you as well as acknowledging certain members of the arts community who have made a big difference.”
Headlining American Comedians Dean Edwards (Saturday Night Live, Def Comedy Jam) and Remy (“Saudis in Audis” creator) are the perfect guests as they represent Dubomedy. This pair of comedians reflect the East meets West balance that binds Dubomedy. Dean is from New York like Mina as Remy is a comedian of Arab decent like Ali. “Like Dubai, Ali and I are East meets West. We use comedy as a tool to bring people of diverse cultures and religions together. Unity. One love, one laugh.” says Liccione.
Dubomedy’s 3rd Birthday Bash on April 1, 2011 will be hosted by Dubomedy founder Mina Liccione. She not only gets to welcome international comedians to the stage but also her co-director Ali Al Sayed whom is also a headliner along with two graduates of their Comedy program, Virgin Radio’s Simone Heng and Omar Ismial. The Event is being held at the Centerpoint Theater in Dubai Community Theater and Arts Center as this is where all of their classes began and continue to grow. The pre-show Ceremony will be held at 5:30pm and is invitation only. The main event will start at 7:00pm. Be prepared for a series of surprises and guests along the way.
