AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN TOPS POLL OF BEAUTIFUL EYES

On World Sight Day, (Thursday 8 October 2009) in a poll carried out by international sight-saving charity ORBIS, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan beat the likes of Angelina Jolie, Natalie Imbruglia and Megan Fox to the title of most beautiful eyes in the world.

The World Sight Day 2009 theme is gender, highlighting that in poorer countries where eye care is scarce, women and girls are losing out.

As the charity’s poll reveals that women in the UK are twice as likely to get their eyes checked each year than men, women in low income countries are half as likely to have access to any available eye care.

ORBIS trains local medical staff to ensure some of the poorest people in the world have access to treatment that can prevent or treat blindness, and works with communities to make sure these services are available to women and girls.

Rebecca Cronin, Chief Executive of ORBIS UK, said: “ORBIS works to share skills and knowledge so that local eye doctors can tackle avoidable blindness in rural and poor areas. By improving eye care generally we can ensure the resources can be utilized by everyone and encourage whole communities to use them.

“It is heartbreaking that even where treatment is available women are half as likely to receive it and that a staggering two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women and girls.

“ORBIS considers the needs of everybody in tailoring its projects to train local eye doctors, support local eye hospitals, and reach out to poor communities in the most appropriate ways.

“We build services for the whole community. We work in villages providing transportation, organising school screening so all children can have their eyes tested and spreading the word through social workers so everyone in the community knows about the eye care available to them and their children.
