Do You Know What Your Child is Reading?
New Marky Series Safe for Kids

(FORT WORTH, Texas) Parents have many options to monitor the material to which their children are exposed: The V-Chip monitors television and the internet has parental controls. But how much control do parents have over what their children are reading? And more importantly, what is that material teaching them?

Deanna Luke is a children’s book author, mother and grandmother who saw a need for “safe” books for children to read. In response to this, she created a collection called The Marky Series that teaches character-building values to children between the ages of six and nine. The sixth installment, Marky and the Seagull, has just been released (ISBN #: 1-928777-12-0, BOW Books, 2001, $8.95).

“Marky leads children in the direction parents want their kids to go and he does it without being preachy,” says Luke. “Through Marky, children will learn about values and integrity in a fun and exciting way.”

In the tradition of The Babysitter’s Club and the Ramona books, The Marky Series is designed to grow with children. The series follows eight-year-old Marky Stevens throughout the many trials and tribulations of being a kid. Each book in the series is based on a true story and addresses real-life issues, such as sibling rivalry, moving to a new school and adoption. Luke uses a unique double story line to teach the moral of each story.

In Marky and the Seagull, Marky and his family travel to the beach to visit his grandparents. Marky’s aunt and uncle and are there with a little boy who they just adopted. In the second story line, Marky finds an injured seagull that he wants to take care of. In the end, the story lines converge, and Marky learns that all creatures deserve to be loved.

The Marky Series was recently accepted into the Renaissance Accelerated Reading Program, which means the series will be available for required reading opportunities in schools across the country.
