Pressbox (Press Release) -
International students have rated Sheffield Hallam University the highest ranking institute in the United Kingdom for satisfaction in the learning, support and living experience in a globally recognised survey.
Surpassing the efforts of a strong field of competitors for the second year running, Sheffield Hallam has consistently outperformed in the International Student Barometer (ISB) which tracks and compares sixty elements of the student experience across learning, living and support provisions. The University regularly welcomes over 1000 students a year from overseas.
More than forty universities took part in the Autumn 2006 survey completed by i-graduate, attracting responses from over 31,000 students. Sheffield Hallam achieved the highest ratings for many aspects of the learning experience, topping the benchmark group for leaning spaces, language support and library facilities.
Sheffield Hallam's Pro Vice Chancellor of Academic Development Professor Philip Garrahan said: "Every member of staff at the University can be proud of this outcome, which vindicates the University's emphasis on providing excellent student support. The survey results reflect the significant efforts being made by everyone to ensure that the international student experience is of the highest standing."
UK Universities looking towards improving their international student satisfaction could also learn from Sheffield Hallam's welcome on arrival (highest rating), quality and integrated student living experience (second highest across the benchmark) and student support (third in the UK benchmark group).
Clive Macdonald, Director of Student and Academic Services at Sheffield Hallam, said: "It is great news that Sheffield Hallam continues to be recognised for its work in supporting and welcoming international students - we are particularly pleased that this builds on the excellent results from last year. It is even more rewarding as the results are compiled from feedback from the real experience of students living in Sheffield and studying at the university. "
i-graduate is the first organisation to test and analyse the international student experience. The student learning experience considers criteria ranging from learning spaces, technology and language support. In 2006, Sheffield Hallam was voted the best university for the student learning experience, out of 29 institutions.
The announcement was made following research carried out by i-graduate in the first of three waves in the 2006-7 academic year. Findings for the full year will be announced at the second annual i-graduate conference in November. Following continuous praise for the University, and its hosting of the Best Practice Exchange conference in 2006, it is expected that Sheffield Hallam will host 2007's i-graduate conference during its annual International Week celebrations.
