Portia's Story – Patience in Our Lives
Added: (Wed Jan 19 2005)
Portia's Story is a modern fairy tale of a woman who has everything she has ever dreamed of, but loses it all after her husband dies. After burying her husband, his family wastes no time in telling Portia and her three children to vacate farm on which the house was is built because they own it. Portia then has to work her way out of this situation.
The story stays faithful to the genre, with a benefactor wanting nothing in return for his help and the eventual rise of the downtrodden Portia from adversity to strength and success, without losing her humanity in the process. Most of all, Portia's Story is about using what happens to you as an inspiration to become a better person or to preserve the good character you have.
Set in a fictional place in Ghana, and aimed at 7 – 10 year olds, Portia's Story illustrates the principles of forgiveness, patience, faith, hard work and turning set-backs into opportunities for personal growth and change. It is also about following your heart and doing what needs to be done to make your dreams real.
A lot of younger people today aspire to the celebrity lifestyles so often portrayed in music videos and magazines, with little consideration for what it truly takes to reach those dizzying heights of success or stardom. Reading Portia's Story can help to shed light on what it is like to have everything, lose it and regain it, accepting help where it is offered along the way and learning the meaning of true friendship and trust.
The author, Dawn Baaba Arthur was born in Kensington, London but moved to Ghana to live with her grandparents in the early 1960’s. After she left school, Dawn worked with children for a while before coming over to the United Kingdom in the late 1980’s where she worked in a school. Dawn loves children. Often times her house is full with children who come around to visit and are treated as part of her family, as well as her own children. She is very versatile and has a book of poems and two albums to her credit. She presently lives in Harlesden, London..
