Interactive University (IU), the International education specialists, has appointed Professor Timothy O’Shea to its Board.

Professor O’Shea, who is currently the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, brings a wealth of academic and management experience, having spent ten years within senior roles in the higher education sector.

Previous educational positions include Master of Birkbeck College, Provost of Gresham College and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of London, as well as various Artificial Intelligence research roles and elected roles such as Fellow of the European Co-ordination Committee for A.I and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Tim O’Shea’s personal research was in the area of computer aided learning, in particular he pioneered the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems, systems that give automatic remedial advice when students give incorrect answers to automated assessment.

Interactive University, who export Scottish Education and have over 90,000 students throughout the world currently have eight board members from a variety of backgrounds to advise on their business strategy and educational programmes. Professor O’Shea will join Board members such as entrepreneur Ian Ritchie; Janet Lowe, Principal of Lauder College; Gavin Gemmel, Chairman of Scottish Widows and Director of Lloyds TSB Group and Donald Clark, CEO of Epic plc.

Ian Ritchie, IU’s Chairman said:

He will also be able to provide a general overview on current issues within higher education, as well as contacts within the e-learning sector. Tim O’Shea joined the Board on 1st November 2004.
