Heathfield Technology College in Cradley Heath Showcases Technology to Help Schools Meet E-Learning

Pressbox (Press Release) - Senior Management Teams from across the area joined Heathfield Foundation Technology College in Cradley Heath recently to see how the school is helping parents to get more involved in their child’s education on a daily basis with TALMOS, an online learning environment from Core Education (www.coreeducation.co.uk). This teaching and learning tool allows parents to see instantly how well their child is doing at school, where they might need some help and even keep an eye on their attendance at the click of a mouse.

Teachers were discussing how this technology is helping students become independent learners, and attendees had a chance to experience a lesson using this technology and ask pupils and teachers what they think of it.

Using TALMOS, pupils are able to work anytime, anywhere, whether they are in class, the local library or even at home and have access to projects, high-quality curriculum-linked content and can even discuss their work with friends via moderated discussion forums and instant messaging. Teachers can plan lessons, set and mark homework, upload resources and monitor their pupils’ progress online.

The Government has set schools the target of offering parents real-time access to their child’s learning by 2010. TALMOS allows parents to have secure online access to information such as their child’s achievement, attendance and progress whenever and wherever they are. By installing TALMOS, Heathfield College, a secondary school with 1874 students is already taking positive steps to address this goal.

Gary Muckley, Assistant Principal at Heathfield College, comments: “Regular communication between parents, teachers and pupils should be at the heart of every good school and TALMOS has helped us to achieve this. At Heathfield College we understand how essential it is for students to be able to access their work and high-quality resources wherever they are. It is also important that our students have the tools to safely communicate with each other online outside of school. We believe this is having a very positive impact on achievement.”

TALMOS (Teaching and Learning Management Open System) is the market-leading lesson planning and learning platform which provides extensive communications facilities for the use of school staff, pupils and parents. It has built-in teaching and reference material linked to the national curriculum and is designed to manage and assess the performance of the school. Home access to the learning platform allows students to complete and submit their homework online and opens up the opportunity for parents to become involved in the technology their child is using.

Mike Jones, Divisional Director at Core Education, comments: “Heathfield College had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve with their online learning environment and we are proud to have helped them realise this. Schools have many different expectations and requirements and should invest time in the initial stages to evaluate their teaching and learning needs. As Heathfield College demonstrates, it is important to consider which communications technologies are required to facilitate learning outside of the classroom as well as the content.”
