Tire Tracks has launched its interactive, Africa-based education program. The program is now available - for free - for students and teachers around the globe.
LONDON, UK (September 27, 2005) — Launched on September 21, 2005, the Tire Tracks Education program is a truly global, online education program that engages students and teachers in the exploration of one of the most misunderstood, beautiful and diverse continents in the world- Africa. This program:
• helps students to develop cultural understanding and tolerance;
• builds Africa awareness and provides a more balanced view of this diverse continent;
• provides teachers with high quality teaching materials and access to a global teacher community;
• provides students around the world with a free learning tool that stimulates thinking skills and brings ‘real life’ into the classroom; and
• links schools around the world.
Through an interactive, multi-media website, students can embark on a virtual journey, and discover the sights, sounds and stories of 35 African countries as they follow an expedition team throughout a two year, 50,000 mile journey through the African continent. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to interact with the team, schools in Africa, and tens of thousands of participating classrooms from around the world, while also reinforcing concepts learned in a variety of subjects (e.g. geography, citizenship, science, language arts, math, ICT). An integrated, but separate website provides teachers with high quality, modern content and teaching materials that link into this virtual journey, as well as gives them access to a worldwide teacher community, where they can exchange knowledge, lessons and ideas.
The ‘Preparation and Planning’ phase of the program, during which students can follow the final stages of preparations for the expedition and prepare to discover the African continent with the Tire Tracks team, has been co-developed by a dedicated team of over 50 teachers from Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, UK and USA. In January 2006, the ‘Explore Africa!’ phase, which will include stories, photos, sound clips, video broadcasts, and live links with African schools, will start, when the team hits the road. Teachers can sign up on the expedition website: www.tiretracks.org.
